Rates: Public holidays

The calculation of rates, according to which employees are getting paid on public holidays, is done as prescribed in the Act.

By law, public holidays that fall on days on which the employee would normally work, must be seen as a normal day for which the employee should be compensated.  Employees who do not work on the public holiday must be paid for the full day and no short time will be calculated. In Africlock, an employee will receive his normal daily tariff for the public holiday and the hours will be shown as NORMAL HOURS on the employee's pay slip.

Should the employee however be required to work on a public holiday, the total hours worked on that day, will be split on his pay slip.  The employee will receive double payment for the day (in other words normal hours calculated at normal tariff, PLUS additional hours worked, ALSO calculated at normal tariff).  Hours worked in excess of the normal day's hours, will be calculated at double tariff.

The law also states that if an employee works on a public holiday he/she must be compensated for an entire days work (even if he/she didn't work the entire day).

For example:  Should the employee work a total of 11 hours on a public holiday, the calculation on his pay slip will be reflected as follows: 9 hours at normal tariff (displayed as part of the normal hours worked), additional 9 hours at normal tariff (shown next to the public holiday), and 2 hours overtime calculated at double tariff.
